Horse transport UK to Europe (and back) after Brexit

Brexit changed every horse movement UK ↔ EU — EHC, IPAFFS, BCP, Eurotunnel bookings and how to plan a show trip that actually arrives on time.

What changed on 1 January 2021 — and didn't go away

Every horse moving UK → EU now needs an Export Health Certificate from a UK Official Veterinarian, a pre-notification on IPAFFS at least 24 hours before departure and a Border Control Post (BCP) inspection on arrival. Going EU → UK flips the process: DEFRA portal pre-notification plus a GB BCP stop at Dover, Folkestone or Holyhead.

Nothing of this is temporary. The rules have been stable since 2023 and the UK-EU haulage community now runs like clockwork — but only for professionals who book early and carry the paperwork correctly.

Eurotunnel vs ferry: what actually works for horses

Eurotunnel Folkestone–Calais is the fastest option at 35 minutes and keeps the horse on the lorry in a climate-controlled rake. It's also the most-booked route in show season; for a Friday CSI weekend departure we'd book 8 weeks out.

Dover–Calais ferries are cheaper and have flexible sailings but the horse endures 90 minutes on an open car deck. Rosslare–Cherbourg, Dublin–Roscoff and Cork–Santander are the Irish direct ferries that bypass GB entirely — essential since Brexit, slower but zero UK paperwork.

The popular UK ↔ EU routes we run

UK showgrounds feeding European sport: Addington, Hickstead, Bolesworth, Solihull, Sheepgate. EU destinations from the UK: CSI shows at Valkenswaard (NL), Lier (BE), Vilamoura (PT) for winter tour, Oliva (ES), Drammen (NO), Opglabbeek (BE), Lanaken (BE) — plus vet clinics like Liphook, Newmarket, Rossdales, Cotts Farm.

Round-trip timings from Addington to Valkenswaard: 12 hours driving + 35 minutes tunnel + 1 hour paperwork = arrival same day if you leave by 06:00. Sheepgate to Lanaken the same. Stud deliveries (Darley, Shadwell, Cheveley Park) are done overnight routinely.

Cost: the Brexit premium is smaller than you think

A London ↔ Valkenswaard round-trip in 2026 is about 15% more expensive than equivalent Paris ↔ Valkenswaard — the delta is health certificate, BCP fee and tunnel booking. Per-slot it's roughly £150–300 extra, not the £1,000 Brexit fear-mongering suggested.

Emergency rates (same-day departure) run 40% premium. Plan early and you pay close to pre-Brexit levels.

How HORSETRANS handles UK ↔ EU

We operate a standing UK-EU rotation out of our Bratislava hub, partnering with UK-based Official Veterinarians for EHC issuance and holding pre-booked Eurotunnel slots for Friday/Sunday peak departures. Your quote includes all customs, BCP and paperwork — one fixed price.

For emergency vet transfers UK → Newmarket or Utrecht we can typically depart within 6–12 hours of a booking, EHC issued in parallel with loading.
